Root out Child Labour: Kailash Satyarthi to Centre--To dedicate Nobel Prize to India

Noted Child Rights Activist and Nobel Laureate Kailash Sathyarthi today favored the passage of Child Rights Act Amendment Bill in the Parliament during next session.

Addressing a press conference here, Satyarthi stressed the need for passing the bill through needed amendments to ensure that all forms of child labour up to 14 years and worst forms child labour upto 18 years should be banned. Those freed in the age group of 14 years should be given better education and the other with 18 years should be given all rehabilitation benefits avoiding delay. It is irony and shameful to see that the Centre promulgated two Acts of Right to Education and Juvenile Justice Act as they cannot prevent all forms of child labour and not the hazardous ones,  he opined.

‘We have been fighting towards this end and the Centre has to take cognizance of this issue’. Extending thanks to  Union Labor Minister Bandaru Dattatreya for promising to amend the Act, he said that mere lip sympathy will not serve the purpose. The Nation is witnessing a perennial problem of child labour even today and the government,  in coordination with rights activists and society,  should check the menace,  he said.

Dedicate Nobel Prize to India

Satyarthi maintained that he will dedicate his Noble award to the nation and people. Sathyarthi stated that he had written a letter to President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee that he will give back the Nobel Prize to the nation and its people. ‘Indeed, I cannot keep such a big prize with me and instead will give it to India’,  he remarked. ‘For this, I gently sought the President’s permission’ he said.
